Which materials are suitable for memorial jewelry

Memorial jewelry is one of the most personal ways to remember someone. It holds a small piece of someone you miss. Ashes, a lock of hair, a piece of fabric, or sand from a meaningful place.

Because the contents are so precious, the material of the jewelry is just as important. Not every material is suitable for safely and beautifully preserving memories for many years.

Below, I will tell you which materials are most commonly used for memorial jewelry and why certain materials, such as glass and precious metals, are so popular.

Glass: a timeless material for memorial jewelry

Glass is one of the most unique materials used for memorial jewelry and cremation jewelry. My own handmade memorial jewelry uses high-quality Italian glass that is built up layer by layer.

A small amount of ashes, hair, fur, or sand can be incorporated within those layers.

What makes glass unique is how it interacts with light. When you wear the jewelry, the glass subtly catches the light, allowing the memorial material to remain visible forever in a beautiful way.

Glass also has important practical benefits.

The material is highly durable and does not discolor like some synthetic resins can. Glass is also resistant to water, allowing a glass memorial piece to be worn daily without worry.

This is precisely why many people choose glass. It feels pure and timeless, and it has an almost organic depth in which the memory is preserved!

 

Precious metals: gold and silver

In addition to the material in which the memory is incorporated, the metal of the jewelry also plays a major role.

The most commonly used metals for memorial jewelry are:

• 14-karat yellow gold, white gold, or rose gold
  
• 14-karat gold-filled

These metals are durable, skin-friendly, and retain their beauty for years. Furthermore, they are precious metals that retain their value.

Many minimalist memorial pieces combine the glass with a subtle gold or silver setting so that all attention is drawn to the memorial element.

Gold-filled: a durable alternative to solid gold

A material that is becoming increasingly popular in high-quality jewelry is gold-filled.

Gold-filled consists of a thick layer of real gold that is mechanically bonded to a core of another metal. The difference from a standard gold-plated coating is significant. In gold-filled jewelry, the gold layer is many times thicker and therefore much more durable.

The benefits of gold-filled jewelry include:

• Much more wear-resistant than gold-plated jewelry

Resin and other materials

Some memorial jewelry is made with resin or epoxy resin; I only use this material myself in all the memorial rings I offer. This material can be cast transparently, allowing ashes or hair to remain visible.

Although resin is a widely used technique, it also has some disadvantages. Synthetic resin can become more susceptible to scratches or discoloration from sunlight over time.

This is why some memorial jewelry makers prefer glass, which better retains its clarity and color.
